International Week of Deaf People

International Week of Deaf People is here this week! Deaf communities worldwide are coming together under this year’s theme: “No Human Rights without Sign Language Rights.”

Why does this matter? Because sign languages are not just communication — they are culture, identity, and human rights. Recognizing and protecting them ensures Deaf people can lead, contribute, and thrive in society.

To mark the week, the Sign Union Flag (also known as the Deaf Flag) has been proudly raised across Canada. The flag symbolizes unity, identity, and the recognition of Deaf communities everywhere.

Here in Toronto, the flag was raised at City Hall, a powerful reminder that sign language rights are human rights. 💙
